ISTA® TEST PROTOCOLS FOR SAFE TRANSPORTATION

Since 1948, ISTA® has been developing test protocols to ensure that products survive the risky and dangerous global distribution market. ISTA® test protocols and design standards provide the confidence you need to manage risk while optimizing your supply chain processes. The test protocols collect and develop critical data that sets the standard for manufacturers, distributors and testing laboratories worldwide. With international support and a consensus-based approach, our ISTA® test protocols and design standards define how packaging should behave during transportation.

ISTA® members in the shipping industry

ISTA® members active in the shipping industry benefit from the use of the ISTA® Transit Tested Certification Mark.

This means that the packaging has passed the laboratory tests before it is shipped. ISTA verifies the results of the test report and certifies the packaged product for safe shipment within the specified damage limits.

ISTA®-CERTIFIED PACKAGING TESTING

We put packaged products through their paces

Our Proof of Concept Center is an ISTA®-certified test laboratory that verifies the suitability of your packaged products for transport throughout your entire supply chain.

CLIMATE CHAMBER

Our climate chamber with dimensions of 3,500 mm x 3,000 mm x 2,800 mm can simulate various climates with temperatures from - 40° C to + 80° C and a relative humidity of up to 95%.

Climate changes and corrosion tests can also be carried out.

HORIZONTAL IMPACT TEST

We use horizontal impact tests to check the damage resistance of the packaged product for numerous applications:

  • Rough handling by forklift trucks
  • Docking of rail wagons
  • Container handling

The test system offers space for packaged products with dimensions of up to 2,800 mm x 2,300 mm (larger dimensions on request) and a weight of up to 2,000 kg.

VIBRATION TEST

The vibration test shows us possible weak points on contact surfaces between the product and the packaging. Damage caused by vibrations can be prevented by the optimum choice of pick-up points, the design and the use of suitable packaging materials.

Test characteristics:

  • 1,520 mm x 3,040 mm size (larger dimensions on request)
  • Capacity load up to 2,000 kg
  • Measuring frequency 1 Hz - 200 Hz
  • Tip to tip: up to 63.5 mm

DROP TEST

The drop test with a maximum capacity load of 2,000 kg (up to 1,350 kg for free-fall tests) shows whether the packaged product is optimally protected against vertical impacts.

BOX COMPRESSION TEST

Our stacking compression test can test packaging with dimensions of up to 2,000 mm x 1,500 mm x 2,000 mm with a maximum load of 10,000 kg and provides information on the stackability of the packaged product in the warehouse or during transportation.

For packaged products, a calculated force is applied specifically to the test piece without damaging the product.
