THE HISTORY OF CORRUGATED BOARD

Compared to wooden crates, barrels and glass containers, corrugated board is a relatively new packaging material – it is less than 150 years old. The American Albert L. Jones from New York registered a patent for the production of corrugated board in 1871.

The Englishmen Edward Charles Healey and Edward Ellis Allen registered a patent slightly earlier (in 1856), but here the purpose of the corrugated paper was not as packaging, but as a material to make sweatbands for hats.

Corrugated board is a product that comes from paper. It is produced by gluing together at least one plain and one corrugated paper sheet. Paper, a light material, acquires extraordinary strength when corrugated. This is why the corrugationis the main characteristic, the “heart” of corrugated board.

A kind of lightweight construction made of paper creates a stable packaging material. The secret of stability lies in the shape of the corrugation.

The corrugation is produced in the first operation in the corrugator aggregate of the corrugator. The paper web running from the reel is moistened, heated and runs through heated corrugating rolls. Heat, moisture and the interlocking corrugating rolls emboss the paper into the desired corrugated shape. It is a kind of curling process; paper that is only folded would not have the same effect.
